LIFE: WORLD MENTAL HEALTH DAY

Today is World Mental Health Day and we must acknowledge our mental health and how important it is to keep it healthy. Mental health is defined as a state of well-being in which people realize their own potential, can cope with normal life stresses, can work productively, and can contribute to their community according to WHO. According to statistics, mental disorders affect nearly 12 percent of the world’s population – about 450 million or one out of every four people around the world. For instance, the total number of people living with depression in the world is 322 million.

It is quite alarming to see the numbers increase as each day goes by yet there are some people who are still ignorant about mental illnesses. That is why it is my own advocacy to always raise awareness for mental health and how people should take care of it otherwise, you might acquire one of the mental illnesses which would totally affect your life really hard.

Here are some tips on how to stay mentally healthy:

Be mindful. Keep your mind focused on things you're doing and know your priorities. Although, it can be efficient to do multi-tasking but most of the time, it is healthy for your mind to concentrate on one thing.

Relax. Always take a deep breathe especially when stressed out. Just relax and divert yourself if possible when stressed so that it will not get to your mind and affect you.

Be active. You have to stay fit and healthy physically. You always have to release the negative vibes and stress through a positive outlet which is exercising for example. You have to also watch what you eat and keep it healthy. Avoid bad stimulants like alcohol, cigarettes and other bad vices as they may trigger you to do things you would regret and it is not healthy for your mental state.

Open up. Always release your inhibitions and bad feelings. Don't bottle it up. Open up to people you trust and just talk things out especially the things that are consuming your mind. You will always feel better that way.

Stay happy. Keep the things and people that make you happy. Find those things that make your heart happy, or simply find happiness in little things around you.

Let go and be grateful. Let go of grudges and negative things that consume you. Let go of the things that are not under your control which cause a lot of stress. Instead, be grateful of the things you have and cherish them.

Keep your faith strong. It is important to keep your faith strong so that you have a guide in your life which would align you whenever you get lost and give you courage when needed.

In those simple ways, you can assure yourself that you keep yourself mentally healthy and look forward to a better quality of life.
